SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Indiana University South Bend and the University of Saint Francis met up at School Field on Tuesday evening for the series finale rubber match after the two teams split a doubleheader on Sunday in Joliet. It was the Fighting Saints who took the finale as they out-slugged the Titans by a score of 14-3 in a 10-run rule shortened game.
In the opening game of the series the Titans fell 5-3 before winning game two 6-3 over USF.
After a quick first inning in which both starting pitchers retired the side in order, USF started the scoring. Rich Faron doubled to left field and would later score on a seeing-eye single through the left side by Matt Kramer.
The Fighting Saints added another run in the top of the fourth frame but the Titans would get that run back in the bottom half when Chris Mangus (JR/Niles, Michigan) drove in Spencer McCool (FR/Anderson, Indiana) to cut the USF lead to 2-1 after four complete innings.
From that point on everything went the Saints' way as they scored 12 runs over their final four at-bats to defeat the Titans 14-3. The loss moved the Titans to 16-14 overall on the year and 8-5 in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference action.
Tyler Reece (FR/South Bend, Indiana) took the loss for the Titans, his first of the year going 5.1 innings allowing eight runs on 11 hits.
McCool and Jalon Linville (JR/Louisville, Kentucky) each recorded two hits for IU South Bend.
No rest for the Titans as they will travel to Judson University on Wednesday to continue CCAC play.
