SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Chris Mangus (JR/Niles, Michigan) blasted two solo home runs on Tuesday night as the Indiana University South Bend baseball team took two Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference games from St. Ambrose University. The sweep moved the Titans to 18-19 overall and 10-10 in conference play on the year.
IU South Bend put pressure on the SAU defense in the first inning, forcing them into two errors as Kevin Phelps (JR/Portage, Michigan) hit a dribbler to the third baseman who threw it up the right field line, advancing Phelps to third base. Mangus singled up the middle for the game's first run. With two outs and runners on first and second, Damon Dejesus put a ball in play and the third baseman bobbled it allowing Mangus to come around and score to give the Titans a 2-0 lead.
Starting pitchter Trey Bickel (JR/Mishawaka, Indiana) held the Fighting Bees hitless through the first three frames and in the bottom of the third inning Mangus sent a ball over the centerfield fence for his third home run of the year and put IU South Bend in front 3-0.
In the fifth inning the Titans offense struck again as Mason Love (FR/Monmouth, Illinois) ripped a single the other way to score Phelps for the game's final run.
Bickel tossed a complete game allowing just two hits while fanning eight SAU batters.
Mangus finished the game 2-for-2 with two RBI, two runs, and a walk.
Phelps drew a walk with two outs in the bottom of the third inning in the nightcap. Mangus brought Phelps around with a two-run shot over the left field fence to give IU South Bend an early 2-0 lead.
The Fighting Bees finally got on the board in the top of the sixth frame with a two-run homer of their own to even the game at two.
With the game tied at two in the eighth the Titans got two runners aboard via a walk from DeJesus and a single to right field from Linville. Robbie Hernandez (FR/Griffith, Indiana) pinch ran for DeJesus and would go first to third on the Linville single putting runners at the corner with one out. Vinny Essig (FR/Noblesville, Indiana) dropped a bunt down the first base line and Hernandez came in to score the go-ahead run for the Titans.
In the final frame, Austin Weaver (FR/Kokomo, Indiana) came in to shut the door as he retired the Fighting Bees in order to seal the 3-2 victory for the Titans.
Eric Calip (FR/Bollingbrook, Illinois) picked up the win as he tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless relief after IU South Bend starter Ryan Novak (JR/New Lenox, Illinois) pitched 5.1 innings allowing just two runs on four hits and striking out three.
The Titans will return to the diamond on Friday as they host Rochester College in a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 p.m.
