SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Chris Mangus (JR/Niles, Michigan) blasted his fifth and sixth home runs of the season today as the Indiana University South Bend baseball team defeated Trinity Christian College 8-3 in a pivotal Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup. Mangus also roped a double off the left centerfield wall and finished with four RBI in the win.
Brian Reits (JR/Kalamazoo, Michigan) also sent one deep, his fourth home run of the year, a two-run shot over the left field fence. Reits finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Trey Bickel (JR/Mishawaka, Indiana) got the start on the mound for the Titans and tossed a complete game allowing three runs and scattering seven hits while striking out four TCC batters. Bickel moved to 6-4 on the year with the win.
IU South Bend started its scoring early in the first inning as Spencer McCool (FR/Anderson, Indiana) singled through the left side and would later score on Mangus' first home run to straight away center. Sam Azarian (SO/Racine, Wisconsin) picked up two RBI with a single up the middle to make it 4-0 in favor of the Titans after one frame.
It wouldn't be until the fifth inning when the Titans scored again as Mangus led off the inning with a double. After a sacrifice bunt from Mason Love (FR/Monmouth, Illinois), Reits cleared the bases with the Titans' second home run of the game to make it 6-0.
In the top half of the seventh frame the Trolls got on the board with a solo home run and a bases loaded walk to cut the IUSB lead to 6-2. TCC would make it 6-3 with another solo shot in the top of the eighth but Mangus put the game out of reach with his second homer of the day in the bottom of the eighth frame.
Bickel stranded a TCC runner in the top of the ninth to seal the victory for the Titans.
The Titans will travel to TCC tomorrow to close out the series with a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
