SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Indiana University South Bend baseball team closed out its inaugural season with a 9-5 victory over Purdue University Calumet on Monday night. The Titans finished their season with an overall record of 21-30 and 13-17 in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
Chris Mangus (JR/Niles, Michigan) started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as he sent his seventh homerun over the centerfield fence to give IU South Bend an early 1-0 advantage. Mangus finished the game with two hits and two runs batted in.
T.J. Cerven got the start for the Titans and went five innings giving up two runs and scattering four PUC hits. With the win Cerven moved to 3-1 on the season.
The Peregrines took a 2-1 lead in the top of third frame but just two innings later IU South Bend roughed up PUC reliever Matt Sandoval for four runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 5-2. In the top half of the sixth the Peregrines plated two runs to get within one but the Titans scored four runs in their final two at-bats to put the game out of reach.
Austin Pickett (FR/Gunnison, Utah) and Tyler Reece (FR/South Bend, Indiana) each tossed a scoreless inning in relief while Mason Love (FR/Monmouth, Illinois) made the switch to the mound from third base in the ninth inning to shut the door.
