BUTTE, Mont. – The Indiana University South Bend volleyball teams' historical season came to an end on Saturday night as they fell 3-0 (12-25, 16-25, 22-25) to Montana Tech University in the opening round of the NAIA National Volleyball Tournament. The Titans hit just .114 in the loss which included 20 attack errors on 70 total attacks.
Sierra Conklin (SR/LaPorte, Ind.) and Ashley McClintock (JR/Westville, Ind.) led the Titans with nine kills apiece, respectively. Janelle Rehlander (JR/LaPorte, Ind.) had a team-high 10 digs while Leah Wimmer (SO/Goshen, Ind. ) dished out 11 assists.
A slow start in the opening set put the Titans behind 8-2 forcing IU South Bend to call its first timeout of the set. The tough IU South Bend defense had trouble containing the Montana Tech hitters as they hit at a .667 clip with 18 kills in the opening set while the Titan offense hit a dismal .067 with six kills and five errors. IU South Bend could not overcome the early deficit as they fell behind one set to none with a 25-12 loss.
The Titans looked more comfortable both offensively and defensively in the second set as they took an early 5-2 lead. The Orediggers used a 12-2 run to double up the Titans at 14-7 forcing Coach Ashmore to use her second and final timeout of the set. That was all the Diggers needed as they cruised to a 25-16 victory to go up 2-0 in the match.
It was all the same in the third and final set as the Titans held a lead but could not maintain it. MTU came from behind to win the final set 25-22 and complete the sweep of the Titans.
IU South Bend finishes the season with a 19-22 overall record.
