WESTVILLE, Ind. – The Indiana University South Bend women's basketball team had No. 13 Purdue University Northwest on the ropes on Wednesday but the Pride were able to come away with a 66-56 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory.
The Titans got off to a slow start on Wednesday night, falling behind 13-5 in the opening frame. However, the Titans went on an 8-0 run capped off by a layup from Vicki Gard (FR/Schererville, Ind. ) to even the game at 13. Purdue Northwest scored the final four points of the quarter to take a 17-13 advantage into the second quarter.
Trailing by seven with 5:12 to play in the half a Sarah Rogian (JR/Boggstown, Ind.) bucket followed by a triple from Gard got the Titans within two points with 40 seconds to play in the half. PNW quickly scored five points to end the half to go into the break, up 30-23.
Paige Avery (JR/Mishawaka, Ind.) gave the Titans the lead with 2:35 left in the third quarter but PNW continued to answer and would head into the final stanza with a slim two-point lead.
Trailing by as many as seven points in the final quarter and cut it to as few as two but the 13th ranked PNW offense proved to be too much for the Titans as they drop their fourth game in five tries.
Avery finished with a team-high 16 points while Gard added 13 points. Lucy Presnal (SO/South Bend, Indiana) chipped in with 11 points.
Loren Vukovits (SO/North Liberty, Ind.) was one point shy of a double-double as she finished with nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
