DAVENPORT, Iowa – A balanced scoring attack helped lead the Indiana University South Bend women's basketball team to a 69-67 victory over the host St. Ambrose University Fighting Bees on Saturday afternoon. Four Titans finished in double-figured led by Paige Avery (JR/Mishawaka, Ind.) with 15 points.
IU South Bend took control of the first quarter at the 4:49 mark when Taylor Wesley (FR/South Bend, Indiana) knocked down a jumper to put the Titans in front 12-11. The Titans outscored the Fighting Bees 11-4 over the last four minutes of the first quarter to take a 23-15 advantage.
In the second half IU South Bend built its lead to as many as 12 points, but SAU got their offense going and was able to cut the Titans lead to six points at 35-29 before the break.
The Titans entered the final quarter with a nine point lead and extended it to 11 with the first bucket of the fourth frame. The Fighting Bees held the Titans scoreless for a two-minute stretch and was able to cut the deficit to four points with 6:33 to play.
With 2:45 left in the game SAU evened the game at 60. Two made free throws from Lucy Prenal and a jumper from Sarah Rogian (JR/Boggstown, Ind.) put the Titans back in front by four points. Both teams traded points down to the final buzzer. Presnal hit one out of two free throws with 11 seconds left to give the Titans a slim two point advantage. On the Fighting Bees final possession, Loren Vukovits (SO/North Liberty, Ind.) napped a steal to seal the victory for the Titans.
Vukovits finished with 14 points and eight rebounds in just 14 minutes of action. Wesley added 11 points while Rogian chipped in with 10 points.
