ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – Paige Avery (JR/Mishawaka, Indiana) and Vicki Gard (FR/Schererville, Indiana) combined for 49 points as the Indiana University South Bend women's basketball team snapped its four-game losing streak on Saturday defeating Robert Morris Illinois 68-67.
A slow start in the first quarter put the Titans in a 17-9 hole. Although IU South Bend trailed the entire second quarter they trimmed the RMU lead to four points before the break at 36-32 as Brianna Blackwell (JR/Whiting, Indiana) hit a three at the buzzer. Gard and Avery scored 17 of the Titans 23 second quarter points.
Avery took over in the third quarter outscoring the entire Eagles team 15-11. Avery was 6-of-7 from the field and a perfect 3-of-3 from long distance in the frame. Back-to-back three's by Avery gave the Titans their first lead of the game at 3:13 mark. Lucy Presnal (SO/South Bend, Indiana) followed with a jumper to extend the IU South Bend lead to five, its largest lead of the contest.
With 3:12 to play in the game the Titans found themselves trailing by seven points. Both teams traded baskets but it was Gard's turn late as she drained consecutive triples to even the game at 67 with 20 seconds left to play.
After a much needed defensive stop, Gard pulled down the rebound off an RMU miss and was fouled. With the Titans in the double bonus, Gard went to the line for two. After missing the first one, the second one fell giving the Titans a one-point lead with five seconds to play. The Eagles had a chance to win it at the buzzer but could not convert giving the Titans their eighth win of the season.
Avery finished with a game-high 26 points while Gard added 23 in the win.
IU South Bend will return to action on Wednesday as they host Holy Cross College. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. and will be streamed live on portal.stretchinternet.com/rrsn/.
