SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Paige Avery (JR/Mishawaka, Indiana) scored six of her eight points in overtime on Saturday afternoon as the Titans slipped past Trinity International University 61-57 to pick up their second win in three tries. Avery struggled to find the bottom of the net but delivered when IU South Bend needed her most. The junior played 40 minutes and also dished out six assists.
IU South Bend came out with some energy in the first quarter and jumped out to an early 7-2 lead. After a 6-0 run from the Trojans the Titans were playing from behind but it didn't take long for the Titans to re-focus as they led 19-14 at the end of the frame.
The middle quarters gave the Titans trouble as they were outscored 27-16 over the second and third quarter.
Brianna Blackwell (JR/Whiting, Indiana) put the Titans back in front with 5:20 to play in the game as she drained a triple. Avery followed that up with her first bucket of the game to give IU South Bend a three-point advantage with just over four minutes to play.
Down the stretch both teams traded baskets. TIU pulled ahead with 37 seconds left as they got an easy layup. With five seconds and the Titans trailing by two, Lucy Presnal (SO/South Bend, Indiana) sliced through the lane and got a jumper to fall, sending the game into an extra period.
In the overtime period Avery took over scoring six of the Titans 10 points and never letting the Trojans get back into the contest.
The win moves the Titans to 9-15 overall and 5-10 in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference action.
IU South Bend will return to the hardwood on Wednesday as they travel to Trinity Christian University.
