LAKEVILLE, Ind. – IU South Bend baseball notched its sixth consecutive game with a 4-2 win over crosstown rival, Bethel College on Monday night. The six-game winning streak is the longest of the year for the Titans.
The IU South Bend pitching staff held the Pilots to just two runs on eight hits and six strikeouts. Freshman Jordan Moore (FR/Flat Rock, Michigan) got the start and went 4.1 innings allowing one run on four hits. Andy Ross (FR/Middlebury, Indiana) came on in relief allowing just one run on two hits.
Brett Bashaw (SO/Kalamazoo, Michigan) earned his second win of the year as he pitched two innings of shutout ball as he held Bethel to two hits while Luke Gaboury (SR/South Bend, Indiana) came in to shut the door in the ninth inning earning his first save of the year.
Zack Lazenby (JR/Chesterfield, Missouri) got the Titans on the board in bottom of the second with an RBI single after he beat out a groundball to the shortstop. Sammy Nieves (SR/Canovanas, Puerto Rico) scored on the play after reaching on a leadoff walk.
The Pilots evened the game at one in the fifth inning with a solo homerun but the Titans got it back in the home half of the inning after Chris Mangus (SR/Niles, Michigan) ripped a double down the left field line scoring Brandon Papp (JR/Akron, Ohio) who reached earlier on a single through the left side.
IU South Bend took advantage of a Bethel miscue in the seventh inning as they scored two runs to take a 4-2 lead after Bethel evened the game at two in the sixth.
Mangus finished 2-for-4 while Nick Kellams (JR/Dyer, Indiana) led the Titans with three hits from the designated hitter position.
On Thursday, the Titans will travel to Roosevelt University for a conference double header. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. eastern time.
