
Betsy Grogan (Battle Ground, IN/West Lafayette Harrison HS) scored 15 points to lead four Titans in double-figures as IU South Bend (17-6/4-2 CCAC) avenged an early-season loss to Purdue-Calumet with an 80-61 win. Ashley Hummer (South Bend, IN/Mishawaka Marian HS) and Lizzie Stapke (Highland, IN/Highland HS) each chipped with 12 points, while Whitney Cole (North Judson, IN/North Judson HS) added 11 more.
From the outset, the Titans took control of the game, leading 23-4 more than 12 minutes into the contest. Stapke knocked in three of her four triples in the opening stanza to lead the way into the half, while Grogan, Cole and Leah Meyer (Goshen, IN/Northridge HS) each added six before the break, as IU South Bend held a 42-21 edge as the teams went to the locker rooms.
In the second half, the Titans held their lead for the early stages of the frame, pushing it to as many as 24 in the opening minute on a Cole three. The Peregrines, however, would not go away, putting together a 13-2 streak midway through the half to pull within 11 and forced a Titan timeout.
Out of the stoppage the Titans went on an 11-0 run of their own, pushing the lead back to 22 and putting the game out of reach.
For the contest, IU South Bend shot 50.8% from the floor and 41.1% from behind the three point line, while holding PUC to 35.5% and 28.6%, respectively. The Titans also forced 28 Peregrine turnovers in the game.
Grogan also led the Titans by dishing out five assists - and IU South Bend registered 23 helpers on 30 field goals. Stapke paced the Titans by pulling down seven rebounds, while Simpson and Katie Hacker (Indianapolis, IN/Franklin Central HS) each corralled six.
IU South Bend returns to action on Saturday, when they travel to Deerfield, IL to take on Trinity International. The Titans dropped the Trojans 71-54 on December 7 in South Bend and will look for the season sweep. Tip off is slated for 5:30 PM EST.
