Mishawaka, IN – The IU South Bend women's volleyball team dropped their season opener against Bethel College 3 sets to 1 (19-25 23-25 26-24 21-25).
The Titans kept it close the majority of the first set. After a service ace by Ashley McClintock (SR/Westville, Indiana) brought the Titans within 2 points (14-16) Bethel went on a 9-5 run to win the first set by a final score of 25-19.
The Titans responded by jumping out to a 16-11 lead in the second set. Then Bethel made another run to tie the score at 17-17. The Titans went on to win the next two points of the match helped by a kill from Sydney Lubinski (SO/South Bend, Indiana) and a block made by Morgan Powell (FR/New Prarie, Indiana) and Ashley McClintock. The Titans held on to a slight 23-21 lead late but could not close the set, going down 0-2 in the match.
The Titans showed some hope in the third set. With the score tied 24-24 Morgan Powell contributed one of her 6 kills on the night to give the Titans a 25-24 lead. They went on to win the set 26-24 on a ball handling error. But the Titans dropped the fourth set to lose the match 1-3
Sarah Allison (JR/Mishawaka, Indiana) led the Titans with 14 kills, Jadalyn Tindall (SR/Fort Wayne, Indiana) dished out a team best 18 assists, and Janelle Rehlander (SR/LaPorte, Indiana) contributed an impressive 20 digs to lead the Titans defensively.
The next time IU South Bend will take the court is Aug.25 when they will compete against Carlow University and Lawrence Technological University in the UM Dearborn Earlybird Tournament.
