Betsy Grogan (Battle Ground, IN/West Lafayette Harrison HS),
Kayla George (Peru, IN/Maconaquah HS) and
Whitney Cole (North Judson, IN/North Judson HS) each scored 14 points to lead six players in double figures for IU South Bend (19-7/5-2 CCAC) to a 86-73 win over Judson on Thursday night.
Lizzie Stapke (Highland, IN/Highland HS) added 14 points,
Becca Hoefler (Valparaiso, IN/Valparaiso HS) 12 and
Ashley Hummer (South Bend, IN/Mishawaka Marian HS) ten.
Early in the contest, the Titans jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead, after a Courtney Simpson (Nappanee, IN/NorthWood HS) layup, a Cole bucket and a Hoefler triple. The Eagles, however, would not go quietly, fighting back with a 10-4 run of their own to cut the IU South Bend lead to just one five minutes in.
Another Titan spurt took the lead back up to as many as eight, but again Judson fought back, eventually grabbing their first - and only - lead of the contest at 23-21 after a Kristi Siemers three-pointer. Yet again, IU South Bend would take off on a run, this time a 12-2 edge, and regained the lead by nine at 33-24 with five minutes remaining in the opening stanza.
The final five minutes were played close to the vest, but it was Judson who gained the edge over that period, closing the Titan lead to just three at the half, 39-36
To open the second half, Judson tightened the lead once again - this time to one at 42-41 - but from there IU South Bend embarked on yet another surge, opening that one-point lead to a 16 point margin on the strength of a 15-0 stretch over just three minutes early in the half.
Judson made several attempts to cut into the lead, closing to just five with seven-and-a-half minutes to play, but once again, the Titans answered with a 16-5 run to seal the game.
Simpson nearly joined the six players in double figures, as she tallied nine points and she led the Titans with seven rebounds. Grogan scored 12 of her 14 points from the free throw line, connecting on 12-of-14 from the charity stripe. For the game, IU South Bend was good on 28 of their 34 free throw attempts.
The Titans will celebrate senior day - and the career of lone senior Whitney Cole - when they return to action on Saturday, February 20 by playing host to second-ranked St. Xavier. Tip-off is set for noon at the Student Activities Center.
