Four Titan players scored in double figures, led by a season-high 19 from Lizzie Stapke (Highland, IN/Highland HS), but it was not enough for IU South Bend (18-9/5-3 CCAC) to overcome a sluggish start as they fell 72-68 to NAIA D1 #2 St. Xavier. Katie Hacker (Indianapolis, IN/Franklin Central HS) added 16 points, while Betsy Grogan (Battle Ground, IN/West Lafayette Harrison HS) and Ashley Hummer (South Bend, IN/Mishawaka Marian HS) each added 11.
The first five minutes of the contest were all Cougars, as SXU jumped out to a 12-1 lead, taking control of the scoring with a short jumper from Marquita Smith. Hacker was able to stem the tide momentarily with a pair of free throws to make the score 12-3, but Alex Barone scored at the other end for the Cougars to push the edge back to 11.
From there, the Titans slowly chipped away at the lead, coming within 2 at 18-16, then closing the margin to just one after a Hummer triple. SXU then embarked on a quick 7-0 spurt, and after IU South Bend answered with a 6-2 burst of their own, the Cougars closed the half on an 11-2 run to take a 40-27 halftime lead.
The Titans came out hot in the second half, quickly lowering the lead from 13 to 4 with an 11-2 run to open the stanza, but that run was answered by SXU, with a 7-0 run taking the lead back to 11.
IU South Bend eventually closed the lead back to just one point again, and after a missed free throw by Smith for SXU, Hummer was unable to convert inside for what would have been the Titans first lead of the contest. Kathlyn McClain then came up the floor and hit a three-pointer from the right wing to give the Cougars a four-point lead once again.
The two teams traded scores for most of the remainder of the game, with the Titans coming within two points on three separate occasions, but they were never able to grab the lead and fell by four.
Stapke connected on 5-of-9 from the outside, leading the team to a 10-for-22 (45.5%) day from the outside. Hacker pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Titans, and Grogan handed out six assists.
