South Bend, IN- The IU South Bend men's basketball team dropped their conference opener to Robert Morris University by the score of 74-49 on Saturday afternoon at the Student Activities Center on the campus of IU South Bend. The Eagles are currently rated #1 in the country in NAIA Division I. With the victory RMU improves to 15-1 on the season and the Titans fall to 6-11.
IU South Bend hung tough with the Eagles and held a 20-15 edge on a pair of free throws by Steven Heatherly with 10 minutes left in the first half. RMU erased the deficit and took a 40-27 lead into halftime led by Diante Watkins. Watkins was right on target for the Eagles nailing 3-of-5 three pointers early on in the contest. Watkins scored 18 points in the first 20 minutes of play and finished with a game-high 25 points in the victory.
In the second half it was Reggie Bunch leading the way for the Eagles. Bunch tallied 14 points in the final 20 minutes of the contest and ended the game with 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the floor. As a team the Eagles connected on 31-of-63 shots for 49% from the field in the victory.
Junior Jake Berger turned in his best performance of the season for IU South Bend in the defeat. Berger registered a double-double scoring 11 points and pulling down 10 rebounds in 31 minutes of action. Henry Smith provided spark off the bench for IU South Bend as he poured in 10 points and had two blocks on the afternoon. Alanzo Bass chipped in with nine points and three steals for the Titans
The Titans will be back in action on Tuesday, January 18th, when they travel to Calumet College of St. Joseph to take on the Crimson Wave. Tip-time is set for 8:30 EST.
