Chicago, IL- Steven Heatherly scored a game-high 23 points as the Titans defeated Saint Xavier University 66-53 in CCAC action on Saturday afternoon. With the victory IU South Bend stands at 10-12/2-1 CCAC and is riding a four game winning streak. SXU falls to 15-8/1-3 CCAC.
The Titans played their most balanced game of the season on both ends of the ball in the victory. IU South Bend registered four players in double figures. Leading the way was sophomore Steven Heatherly who hit on 8-of-14 field goals, including an impressive five from the behind the arc. Brother Kyle Heatherly continues to show leadership on the floor as the sophomore guard pumped in 16 points and dished out a game-high eight assists along with three swipes.
Big man Jake Berger chipped in with 12 points and was a force in the middle as the junior connected on 6-of-8 shots. Point guard Alanzo Bass served as the floor general as the sophomore tallied 10 points, 7 assists and 7 boards in the victory. Brad Kunce did a solid job once again cleaning up the glass for the Titans as the junior forward hauled down a game-high 11 rebounds. This is the fifth consecutive game Kunce led the Titans in rebounding.
"Today's win was about as good as a team win we've had all year. I am proud of the way our team competed in the second half," said IU South Bend Head Coach Chad Tapp.
The Titans trailed 29-28 coming out of the halftime break and took matters into their own hands. IU South Bend scorched the nets shooting 64% in the final 20 minutes of action and for the game connected on an impressive 10-of-16 from beyond the arc. IU South Bend finished the contest on a 21-4 run to seal the deal. The Titans continued to protect the ball on offense committing just nine turnovers.
Before today's contest, SXU was undefeated at home standing at 11-0. Scott Taloff led the Cougars with 10 points.
IU South Bend will return to action on Tuesday when they hit the road to take on the Tigers of Olivet Nazarene University. Tip-time is slated for 9:15 EST.
