The Titans registered three players in double figures. Junior Jake Berger continues to play well as the big man scored 13 points and sophomores Alanzo Bass and Steven Heatherly added 10 points apiece. The Cougars had four players in double figures and were led by Brad Karp with 24 points and Mark Peters was a force in the middle and chipped in with 16 in the victory.
St. Xavier jumped out early to an 11-4 lead in the first couple of minutes in the contest. The Cougars forced the Titans into 11 first half turnovers and capitalized on the offensive end. IU South Bend would make a late run to trim the Cougar lead. Steven Heatherly hit back-to-back threes to cut the deficit to 22-14. Then, Alanzo Bass hit a jumper at the buzzer to cut the lead to 29-23 lead just before the break.
In the second half, the Cougars pushed the lead to 50-37 with 10 minutes to go in the contest. SXU would never look back as they continued to own the paint. The Cougars controlled the boards by out re-bounding the Titans 29-14. SXU shot 60% from the floor in the second half and 52% for the game. They held the Titans to 39% in the second half and 42% for the game.
IU South Bend is back in action on Tuesday, February 22, as they host Olivet Nazarene University for a conference battle. Tip-time is set for 8 p.m. EST.
