Lauren Adams (Goshen, IN/Northridge) and Lizzie Stapke (Highland, IN/Highland) each scored 12 points and Emily Peppers-VanNamee (South Bend, IN/Northridge) added ten more as IU South Bend (2-3) picked up a 46-45 win over visiting UM-Dearborn on Saturday afternoon. Stapke also led the way on the glass, as she and Courtney Simpson (Nappanee, IN/NorthWood) each grabbed seven caroms.
From the start, it was a low-scoring affair, with the game tied at seven with nine minutes to play in the opening half. After the Wolves grabbed a three-point edge, Peppers-VanNamee answered with a three-point play, kicking off a quick 7-0 run to give IU South Bend the edge.
After the teams trades scores, UMD pulled within three at 20-17, but the Titans responded in the final minute, with Stapke scoring four quick points to take a 24-17 edge into the break.
Out of the half, the Titans scored the first six points - and held the Wolves scoreless for nearly four mintues - as they extened their edge to 30-17. Following an extended scoreless streak for both teams, Adams and Stapke connected on back-to-back baskets to give IU South Bend their largest lead of the game at 14 points.
The Wolves, however, had an answer, embarking on an 11-0 run to pull to within three at the five-minute mark. A pair of UMD free throws with 3:30 to play brought the Titan lead to one, but Nichole Sly (Niles, MI/Niles) answered with a basket and gave IU South Bend a four-point lead again.
After a UMD basket, Sly connected on a pair of charity tosses with 13 seconds to play to once again push the lead to 4, and the Titans held on for the win.
Sly also grabbed six rebounds, handed out three assists and picked up three steals, while Stapke led the defense for the Titans with four takeaways.
The Titans return to action on Tuesday, November 15, when they travel to Milwaukee, WI, to take on Cardinal Stritch. Tip off is set for 8:00 (EST).
