Titan Men Rally, Come Up Short Against Holy Cross
Men's Basketball - Sat, Nov. 26, 2011
IU South Bend
Holy Cross College
Steven Heatherly (Mishawaka, IN) scored 23 points and Henry Smith (Auburn Hills, MI) added 20 points and seven rebounds, but it was not enough as IU South Bend (4-4) fell behind midway through the first half and could not come back, dropping a 66-61 decision to Holy Cross.
Out of the gate, the teams traded baskets, with Smith scoring six of the first eight tallies for the Titans as they grabbed an 8-7 lead early. The Saints responded, however, with a 16-6 spurt over the next seven minutes to take a 23-16 edge.
Chris Beam (Borden, IN) answered for IU South Bend, scoring the next five points for the Titans. Smith chipped in four and Heatherly added two more as IU South Bend used an 11-4 spurt to pull within two with just under three minutes to play in the opening half. From there, the Saints controlled the rest of the period, closing on a 9-1 run over the final two-and-a-half minutes to take a 36-26 lead into the break. Smith contributed a dozen of his points in the half, connecting on 6-of-7 from the floor and Beam added eight.
Out of the break, the Titans got rolling early as Alanzo Bass (Indianapolis, IN) found Heatherly for a short jumper and Smith for back-to-back lay-ups, pulling IU South Bend to within four points at 36-32. After the Saints answered with a pair of scores, the Titans closed to four once again, this time on a pair of Bass charity tosses and a Heatherly three.
After the teams traded scores, the Saints put together a quick 6-0 burst, extending their lead to eleven at 51-40 with less than nine minutes to play. The Titans were not done, however, responding with an 11-5 spurt to bring the lead back to five at 53-48.
The teams traded baskets once again, before Ason Hacker (Bedford, IN) gathered in an offensive rebound and scored to cut the Saints' lead back to five at 59-54. Holy Cross committed a turnover on the next possession and the Titans took advantage, as Smith was fouled driving to the rim and converted both free throws to cut the margin to 59-56.
The Saints got a pair of three throws from Taylor Williams to stretch the margin back to five, but Heatherly answered with a right-corner three to slice the lead to just two at 61-59 with just 29 seconds to play. The Saints converted another pair of free throws with 22 seconds to go, pushing the game out of reach for the Titans.
The Titans return to the court on Thursday, December 1, when they host Andrews. That game is set to tip off at 8:00 PM (EST).
