Ashley Carson (Winchester, TN/Franklin County) scored the final two of her 11 points in the final second of the contest as IU South Bend (4-5) grabbed their largest lead - and took it for just the second time - of the game with eight tenths of a second remaining, upending IU Northwest 49-47. Carson found an offensive rebound with three second to play, and connected on a 15-foot jumper as she was fouled to give the Titans the win. Emily Strilich (Valparaiso, IN/Boone Grove) scored a team-high 19 points and Courtney Simpson (Nappanee, IN/NorthWood) added 13 more.
IU South Bend started slow, falling behind 14-0 nearly seven minutes into the game and eventually finding themselves trailing 20-2 midway through the opening period. After the teams traded baskets to bring the score to 22-5, the Titans embarked on an extended 17-2 run of their own, capped by six consecutive points from Strilich, ultimately pulling to within four points at the half.
Out of the break, IU South Bend continued their run, tying the contest for the first time at 30 with 16:40 to play. The Redhawks responded, however, scoring the next nine points of the game to pull back ahead. The lead bounced between seven and nine for the next few minutes before the Titans once again began to chip into the margin. A Lauren Adams (Goshen, IN/Northridge) jumper, followed by a Nichole Sly (Niles, MI/Niles) steal and fast break score cut the lead to five.
IUN picked up the next two points from the free throw line, but the Titans were not done. Carson connected on a triple to pull within two and Strilich followed with a runner as the shot clock expired to tie the game at 45 with just over three minutes to play. Strilich hit another jumper from the left baseline to give the Titans the lead just a minute later, and after the Redhawks split a pair of free throws to tie the game, the final sequence was set.
The Titans had possession with 33.2 seconds remaining, but a turnover gave control back to IUN. The Redhawks committed a miscue of their own with 20 seconds to go, giving IU South Bend the ball back with the shot clock turned off. Sly drove the left side and pitched to Strilich who came up short on a three-point attempt. Carson found her way to the loose ball and connected on a jumper - while being fouled - to give the Titans the win with just eight tenths of a second to play.
The Titans return to action on Tuesday, December 6, when they host Huntington. Tip-off of that game is set for 7:00 PM (EST).
