Mishawaka, IN- The IU South Bend men's basketball team dropped a hard fought contest 69-66 on Tuesday night at the Wiekamp Athletics Center located on the campus of Bethel College. The game saw a seesaw battle back and forth as the lead changed sixteen times.
With 1:37 left to go in the contest the Titans had a three point lead after a Henry Smith bucket in the paint. The Pilots would answer as sophomore Taylor Kolbus knocked down a jumper and then a foul call was made underneath the basket as Jordan Bowerman connected on a pair of free throws to put Bethel up 67-66. After a two point miss by Steven Heatherly Bethel's Matt Schauss hit a two-point jumper with just 14 seconds left on the clock. The Titans had one last attempt to tie the game but a desperation 3-point jumper by freshman Austin Rasche came up short as time expired.
Senior Henry Smith led the Titans with game-highs in both points and rebounds as the southpaw pumped in 19 points and pulled down 6 boards on the night in 35 minutes of action. Teammate Chris Beam was perfect from the field going 5-of-5 for a total of 14 points. Steven Heatherly chipped in with 9 points to round out the scoring for the Titans.
The Pilots registered four players in double figures. Leading the way was freshman Matt Schauss with 13 points while Zach Miller chipped in with 12 points.
The Titans return to action on Friday, December 9, when they travel to Marygrove College. Tip-off of that game is set for 7:00 PM (EST).
