Leah Meyer (Goshen, IN/Northridge) scored a career-high 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds, while Lizzie Stapke (Highland, IN/Highland), Kayla George (Peru, IN/Maconaquah) and Emily Strilich (Valparaiso, IN/Boone Grove) each joined her in double figures with 14, 11 and 10, respectively, as IU South Bend (7-8) broke open a close game early and cruised past Goshen 75-51. The Titans used first half runs of 9-0 and 9-1 along with a 21-0 stretch - during which seven different players scored - in the second half to push their margin to as many as 33.
The opening five minutes of the game were tightly contested, with IU South Bend holding a slim 11-9 edge. The next five minutes, however, were all Titans, as they ran off the first of their runs. Meyer got it started with back-to-back-to-back scores in the paint, followed by a Staci Funkhouser (McCordsville, IN/Mount Vernon) free throw and capped by a Stapke lay-in, giving IU South Bend a 20-9 advantage.
The margin would remain nearly the same over the next six minutes, but headed to the half the Titans ran off the second of their runs. This time, however, it was a 90-second blitz, as Stapke hit a pair of triples, sandwiched around a George three, giving IU South Bend a 41-24 lead into the break.
Out of the break, the Maple Leafs started quickly, cutting the Titan lead to a dozen with 15:37 to play, before the Titans put the game out of reach. A pair of Nichole Sly (Niles, MI/Niles) free throws and a triple, followed by back-to-back scores by Meyer and Elyse Lefebvre (Pinckney, MI/Pinckney) pushed the margin to 24. Strilich followed with a jumper, and Kayley Baughman (Mishawaka, IN/Elkhart Christian) added a three-pointer, giving the Titans a 31-point spread, and George finished the 21-0 spurt with a pair of charity tosses.
Strilich added nine rebounds to her ten points and Lefebvre chipped in with eight caroms, while Sly paced the offense with six assists and Courtney Simpson (Nappanee, IN/NorthWood) added five more. Sly also led the defense with five steals.
The Titans return to action on January 10, when they travel to Gary, IN, to take on IU Northwest. Earlier this season, the Titans stormed back from a 20-2 deficit to take a 49-47 win on an Ashley Carson (Winchester, TN/Franklin County) buzzer-beater. Tip off is set for 8:00 PM (EST).
