Emily Strilich (Valparaiso, IN/Boone Grove) scored 12 points and added six rebounds and Lizzie Stapke (Highland, IN/Highland) chipped in with 11, but IU South Bend (7-11, 0-1) fell behind by 11 points early and could not hold on after coming back to grab a lead, falling 52-47 to Calumet College.
Early in the contest, neither team found their offensive groove early on, with CCSJ opening the scoring better than two minutes into the game. From there, the Crimson Wave were slowly able to open up a lead, stretching it to as many as 11 with nine minutes to play in the opening half, before the Titans fought back.
Back-to-back scores by Strilich, followed by a Kayla George (Peru, IN/Maconaquah) lay-in and another bucket by Strilich cut the lead to seven. Strilich scored again on the ensuing possession to bring the Titans to within one with six minutes to play before the half. The teams traded scores into the break, CCSJ ultimately held a 26-23 edge.
Out of the half, the score remained close until the Titans strung together a 9-0 run, giving them a 40-38 lead, their only advantage of the contest. They would tie the game at 43 on a driving lay-up by Stapke, but CCSJ scored the next five points, putting the game out of reach.
The Titans return to the court on Thursday, January 19, when they travel to Trinity International. Tip-off of that game is set for 6:30 PM (EST).
