Emily Strilich (Valparaiso, IN/Boone Grove) took home game-highs with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Kayla George (Peru, IN/Maconaquah) added 17 point and Lizzie Stapke (Highland, IN/Highland) and Courtney Simpson (Nappanee, IN/NorthWood) also reached double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively, as IU South Bend (11-16, 2-5 CCAC) used a 13-2 run to pull away late as they avenged a loss just three weeks ago with a 63-51 win over visiting Roosevelt.
The IU South Bend defense was stifling in the early going, holding the Lakers to just one point over the first nine minutes of the game. In that time, however, Roosevelt's defense was equally stingy, giving the Titans few good looks at the basket and holding them to just five points. By the time the Lakers connected on their first field goal, the nine minutes had passed, but IU South Bend held just a 5-3 advantage.
After the teams traded scores, the Titans found themselves ahead 10-7 with just under ten minutes to play in the opening half before they would go on a 7-0 spurt to open up a ten point lead. Stapke kicked off the run with a triple, followed by a pair of Strilich buckets inside, giving IU South Bend a 17-7 lead. Roosevelt would answer, however, closing the half on an 11-3 run to bring the halftime score close at 20-18.
Out of the break, the Titans struck first, getting a lay-in by Strilich to edge the margin out to four. The Lakers answered again, however, scoring the next five points to take their only lead of the contest at 23-22. IU South Bend responded, getting a steal-and-score from Stapke to take the lead back, followed by a triple from George on the next possession. They kept their momentum going, getting single free throws from both Nichole Sly (Niles, MI/Niles) and Simpson, followed by another basket from Strilich, completing a 9-0 burst in just over two minutes, a stretch during which the Titans failed to score on none of their possessions.
The Lakers slowly chipped into the 31-23 edge, eventually tying the game on three separate occasions, the final time coming at 40-all. From there, the game was dominated by IU South Bend, as they scored again on three consecutive possessions - the final of which was a George three that rattled around the rim and dropped through - to take a seven-point lead. They would eventually stretch their margin to as many as 11, before Simpson hit an uncontested lay-up with just four seconds left to seal the win.
Leah Meyer (Goshen, IN/Northridge) pulled down seven rebounds for the Titans, while Stapke and Simpson each came away with six. Stapke nabbed five steals in the contest and Sly handed out four assists.
The Titans return to action on Saturday, February 18, when they travel to the south side of Chicago to take on St. Xavier. Tip-off of that game is slated for 2:00 PM (EST).
