Lizzie Stapke (Highland, IN/Highland) led four Titans in double figures with a game-high 18 points, but it was not enough as IU South Bend (11-18, 2-7 CCAC) could not overcome a 14-point halftime deficit, falling to NAIA D1 #10 Olivet Nazarene 99-84. Stapke was joined in double figures by Courtney Simpson (Nappanee, IN/NorthWood), Emily Strilich (Valparaiso, IN/Boone Grove) and Ashley Carson (Winchester, TN/Franklin County) who tallied 14, 11 and ten points, respectively.
Both teams started fast, as the game was tied at 20 with just over six minutes gone, before the Tigers took control. After nearly two scoreless minutes, a quick 7-0 burst midway through the opening half gave them a 27-20 advantage. After IU South Bend worked to cut the edge back to four on a Stapke triple, ONU once again went on the attack, scoring 11 straight points over a 90-second span to grab a 15-point lead with under four minutes to play. The teams traded scores for the remainder of the stanza, with ONU holding a 51-37 lead at the break.
Out of the locker rooms, IU South Bend slowly cut into the lead, drawing as close as nine points on a Carson jumper with 14:44 to play. After an ONU basket pushed the lead back to double figures, Lauren Adams (Goshen, IN/Northridge) connected inside to bring the lead back down to nine. The Titans could get no closer, however, as the Tigers used the next ten minutes of game time to slowly spread their lead to a maximum of 22, en route to the 99-84 win.
Strilich also pulled down nine rebounds in the contest to lead all players, while Nichole Sly (Niles, MI/Niles) handed out a game-best five assists.
The Titans will close the 2011-2012 regular season on Saturday, February 25, as they will host St. Francis (IL). Prior to the contest - set for a 12:00 PM (EST) start - IU South Bend will honor seniors Lizzie Stapke and Kayla George.
