Courtney Simpson (Nappanee, IN/NorthWood) notched a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Nichole Sly (Niles, MI/Niles) added a team-high 13 points, but it wasn't enough as IU South Bend (11-19, 2-8 CCAC) connected on just 25.5% (14-55) of its attempts from the floor and 13.6% (3-22) from beyond the three-point line, falling to St. Francis (IL) 56-45 on Saturday afternoon.
The Titans started slowly, connecting on just one of their first eight field goal attempts, and eventually falling behind 8-2 nearly seven minutes into the contest. After they rallied to cut the lead to three on back-to-back scores from Emily Strilich (Valparaiso, IN/Boone Grove), the Titans went cold again, scoring just four points over the next nine minutes and falling behind by as many as 14 with just over two minutes to play in the opening half. Once again, IU South Bend rallied, this time with a quick 7-0 run - a pair of free throws each from Leah Meyer (Goshen, IN/Northridge) and Sly, followed by a Sly triple, and they would trail by eight at the break.
Out of the half, the Saints were once again able to spread out their lead, pushing it back to 13 on a pair of occasions, before the Titans fought back. A 9-0 run, spanning nearly six minutes brought IU South Bend within four at 42-38, before USF scored to make the advantage six once more. An Ashley Carson (Winchester, TN/Franklin County) knocked the margin to five, and a Sly steal-and-score cut it to three with 2:12 to play, but the Titans could get no closer, as USF hit their free throws down the stretch to seal the final score.
The Titans will return to action on Tuesday, February 28, when they will open CCAC Conference Tournament play. The bracket will be set following the completion of all of Saturday's CCAC games.
