Ashley Hummer (South Bend, IN/Mishawaka Marian HS [Goshen College]) poured in 16 points and Katie Hacker (Indianapolis, IN/Franklin Central HS) added 15 - all in the first half - as IU South Bend improved to 2-0 with a 75-48 over Goshen College. The two teams remained close throughout the first half until the Titans broke it open, getting back-to-back three-point baskets from Kayla George (Peru, IN/Maconaquah HS) and Becca Hoefler (Valparaiso, IN/Valparaiso HS) and took a 36-26 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Titans allowed just seven points in the first 11 minutes of play, and extended their lead before Goshen closed the gap slightly with free throws in the final minutes.
In a game that featured 54 total fouls and 57 turnovers, neither team was able to find much rhythm offensively throughout the first half. Goshen shot just 6-22 - including 0-for-8 from beyond the three-point arc - in the opening frame, but converted on 14-of-16 from the free throw line to keep the game relatively close. IU South Bend struggled as well, connecting on 10-of-25 (5-for-12 from three) and making 11 of their 12 free throw attempts.
It was the defensive end of the floor, however, where the Titans made their mark, holding the Maple Leafs to 26.2% (11-of-42) shooting for the game and o-for-13 from behind the arc. The majority of Goshen's points were scored from the free throw line.
Hoefler led the way for IU South Bend on the glass, pulling down seven rebounds in the contest, while Tiffanie Graham (South Bend, IN/Riley HS [Southeastern Illinois CC]) and Betsy Grogan (Battle Ground, IN/West Lafayette Harrison HS) each dished out four assists. Grogan also added four steals.
The Titans return to the floor Tuesday, Nov. 10 when they host NAIA D2 #8 Bethel College. That game is the first of a doubleheader that will also feature the Titan men. The contest is set to tip off at 5:30 PM, and will be recorded for air on SBT-2.
