South Bend, Ind. – The Indiana University South Bend men's basketball team opened their 2013-14 slate with a high-scoring affair with Ohio Mid-Western University on Wednesday night. Tied 38-38 at the half, the Titans scored 59 points in the second half to edge the Rams.
In the opening minutes of the first half, Riley Stichter (Milford, IN) gave the Titans a five point advantage, putting in a layup while drawing the foul, Stichter knocked down the free-throw to complete the three point play.
With 11:52 remaining in the opening stanza, the Rams would drain a shot from beyond the arc to take a 19-18 lead.
Trailing by six with just over seven minutes to play, a Jason Jordan (South Bend, IN) trey ball followed by a pair of free-throws from Joe Godfread (Elkhart, IN) brought the Titans within a point. IU South Bend would knot the game at 38 going into the half when Shane Cook (Elkhart, IN) knocked in a layup and Chris Beam (Borden, IN) hit a free-throw.
In the second 20 minutes, the Titans offense picked up the tempo, outscoring OMWU 59-56. Mark White (Muncie, IN) gave the Titans a ten point lead with 13:21 remaining when he dropped in a three-pointer with the assist coming from C. Beam.
The Rams did not go away quietly as they brought the IU South Bend lead down to three points, but the Titans would withstand the Mid-Western attack.
Leading by just a point with just under three minutes to play, the Titans would go on a 5-0 run to extend their lead to six in the final minutes.
The Rams got within one, but it was too little too late as C. Beam iced the game with a pair of free-throws that would give the Titans a 97-94 win in their season opener.
The Titans had five players in double-figures with Jason Jordan and Chris Beam leading the way with 21 points each. Stichter turned in a big night with 17 points, five boards, two blocks, and three steals. Beacher Ward (Indianapolis, IN) chipped in with 13 points and nine rebounds. White recorded 11 points in the season opener.
The Titans will return to the hardwood tomorrow as they face Andrews University on Halloween. Tip-off is set for 8:00 pm
