South Bend, IN – Despite shooting 52% from the field, the Titans dropped a hard fought game to Goshen College on Wednesday night by a score of 84-80. The game came down to the wire, but it was Goshen who delivered clutch free-throws down the stretch. The Titans got a big contribution from their bench tonight as they accounted for 38 of the Titans 80 points.
The Titans got off to a slow start, as they trailed the Maple Leafs 8-0 early. However, the offense would find their rhythm and turn an 8-0 deficit into a 20-11 lead with a 20-3 run that lasted over five minutes. With 10:43 remaining in the half, Jason Jordan (South Bend, IN) gave IU South Bend their largest lead of the half when he dropped in a layup off a Goshen turnover. The Leafs sustained the Titan run and would end the half on a 29-13 run to end the half and take a three point advantage into the half.
The Titans played from behind for the majority of the second half. Trailing by six with 7:00 minutes to play, the Titans went on a 9-0 run that was capped off by a layup from Mark White (Muncie, IN) to give IU South Bend a three point lead, their first of the half. Chris Beam had a chance to tie the game but could not convert the jumper from just beyond the charity stripe as the Leafs snuck out of the SAC with a four point victory.
Ward turned in a career night as he finished with a team-high 18 points. Jordan scored in double-figures for the fifth time this year as he recorded 15 points in the loss. Brandom Beam (Borden, IN) chipped in 11 points as did Chris Beam. Riley Stichter (Milford, IN) and Joe Godfread (Elkhart, IN) each turned away three shots on the defensive end. The Titans converted 16 Goshen turnovers into 22 points on the night.
The Titans will travel to Bethel College on Saturday to take on the #9 ranked Pilots with tip-off set for 3:00 p.m.
