Hammond, IN –The Titans gave the Peregrines all they could handle on their home floor but came up just one stop short of a chance to pick up their first CCAC victory of the year. The Titans shot 41% from the field in the 84-82 loss on Friday evening.
Trailing 82-79 with 20 seconds remaining in regulation, Chris Beam (Borden, IN) drew a foul while shooting a three-pointer and went to the line for three free throws. Beam knocked down all three to knot the game at 82 with just seven seconds to play. Out of a Purdue Calumet timeout, Noah Allen rose up for a jumper and found the bottom of the net for the thrilling finish.
It appeared as if the Titans were out of it trailing by six with 1:51 showing on the clock, but IU South Bend flashed some signs of toughness down the stretch. After Beam converted a pair from the charity stripe, Mark White (Muncie, IN) sunk a triple to cut the PUC lead to one point with 45 second left in the game. After two free throws from the Peregrines to take a slim three point advantage, Brandon Beam (Borden, IN) put in a layup to cut the PUC lead to a point once again.
After leading by two at halftime, the Titans would maintain their lead for the first five minutes of the second half until the Titans evened the game at 42 with Dioscar Gomez converted the old fashioned three point play.
The remainder of the second half, both teams traded buckets with neither team leading by more than six points.
The Titans went down early by a score of 10-3 and after Chris Beam scored three straight points to bring IU South Bend within four points, both teams would go on a scoring drought that lasted just over three minutes.
The Titans turned a 16-11 deficit into a 17-16 lead after back-to-back triples from Zac Rea (Cambridge City, IN) and Chris Beam. IU South Bend would stretch their lead to seven points on a Beacher Ward (Indianapolis, IN) layup.
With 4:03 left in the opening half, the Peregrines would threaten, but the Titans would cling to slender 34-32 lead going into halftime.
Four Titans finished in double-figures led by Chris Beam who had a team-high 18 points, two steals, and three assists. White finished with 15 while Brandon Beam scored 13 points, nine of which coming from the free throw line. Joe Godfread (Elkhart, IN) was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field with 13 points and three blocks.
The Titans will hit the hardwood again on December 14th when they welcome Saint Francis to the Student Activities Center for a CCAC showdown. Tip-off scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
