Kokomo, IN – After the Titans scheduled game on Saturday was postponed, the Titans traveled down U.S. 31 to battle the Cougars of Indiana University Kokomo in a non-conference clash of two IU campuses on Sunday afternoon. The Titans came away with a 73-65 victory over the Cougars for their fourth win of the season.
After the first half, it looked as if the Titans (4-7) were going to put away the Cougars (2-8) with no trouble, but the Cougars had other thoughts on their home court.
After Joe Godfread (Elkhart, IN) tied the game at five on a layup, the Titans exploded on a 14-4 run to open up a 10 point advantage with 12:20 to play in the opening half. However, the Cougars answered the Titans run with a mini burst of their own as they cut the IU South Bend lead to five points by way of a 7-0 run in which all points came from Randall Lowe.
The Titans would once again go on a back-breaking run, this time an 11-0 run to build their lead to 16 points with 6:36 remaining in the half.
Riley Stichter (Milford, IN) bumped the Titans lead to 20 points when he knocked down a triple off the dish from Brandon Beam (Borden, IN).
The teams would trade buckets all the way until the final buzzer sound as Jared Lawrence turned an IU South Bend turnover into points to cut the Titan lead to 16 points at the break.
In the first 20 minutes of action, the Titans shot an impressive 64% from the field and out-rebounded the Cougars 18-12. Brandon Beam led the Titans at the half with 10 points.
Just minutes into the second half, the Titans saw their largest lead of the game, twice, as a pair of Godread free throws and a basket gave IU South Bend a 21 point cushion.
The lead would not last long as the Cougars picked up their defensive pressure forcing the Titans into some bad looks. With just under 12 minutes to play in the game, Spencer Krhin drained a three to cut the Titan lead to just eight points.
IU Kokomo would linger around before threatening again.
The Cougars' Zach Meyer gave them a spark on the bench as he was 2-for-2 from beyond the arc, including one that made it a six point game at 60-54.
After Krhin hit a pair from the free throw line, the Cougars were trailing by just four points with just over five minutes left.
Leading by just five, Brandon Beam drove to the rim, drew contact and got the basket to fall for a chance at the old fashioned three point play. Beam would convert the free throw to put the Titans up by eight points with 3:17 on the clock.
Chris Beam (Borden, IN) would hit six clutch free throws down the stretch to secure the Titans fourth win of the season.
Four Titans scored in double-figures on the night, led by B. Beam with 17 points to go along with three assists and two turnovers. C. Beam added 15 points, 13 of which came from the free throw line. Stichter was 5-of-7 shooting for 12 points and a team-best eight boards. Jason Jordan (South Bend, IN) chipped in with 10 points.
The Titans won the battle on the glass as they grabbed 34 boards to IU Kokomo's 28. For the game, the Titans shot 47% from the field and 86% from the free throw line.
The Titans return to action on Tuesday as they welcome CCAC foe Calumet St. Joe to the Student Activities Center. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
