South Bend, IN – Close games have been the story a few times for the Titans this team. Tonight was no different, as the Titans came out on the winning side of an overtime thriller by a score of 93-90 over the visiting Calumet College of St. Joseph's Crimson Wave.
The Titans notched five players in double figures with Jason Jordan (South Bend, IN) leading the charge with 18 points, nine of which coming from the free-throw line. Chris Beam (Borden, IN) and Beacher Ward (Indianapolis, IN) each pitched in with 14 points. Zac Rea (Cambridge City, IN) came off the bench and scored 10 big points, with seven coming in the second half. Riley Stichter (Milford, IN) picked up 11 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks in the win.
The Titans (5-7, 1-2) jumped out to an early 12-5 but the Crimson Wave came storming back with a 9-0 run to take a 16-12 lead.
For the duration of the first half, both teams would trade baskets with neither team holding a lead larger than four points. Brandon Beam (Borden, IN) heaved up a prayer at the buzzer with the game even at 39 that banked in, but the officials waved the basket off to keep the game locked at 39 at the break.
The tempo continued to pick up in the second half of action as each team faced deficits, but battled back. With 10:29 to play, the Titans faced a seven point deficit, but quickly turned the deficit into a six point lead with baskets from Rea and Shane Cook (Elkhart, IN).
Tied at 72, each team picked up the defensive intensity and went back-and-forth all the way to the final buzzer of regulation. CCSJ's Franlin Gatson hit the biggest shot of the night for the Crimson Wave as he drove the lane and stopped at the elbow for a jumper and drained it to send the game into overtime.
The first 2:30 of the overtime period belonged to the Crimson Wave as they led 88-86. Chris Beam put the Titans ahead for good as he delivered a dagger from beyond the arc to put the Titans up 89-88. Chris Beam and Jason Jordan each knocked down a pair from the free-throw line to give the Titans their fifth win of the season.
The Titans hit the road on Thursday as they travel to Purdue North Central for a CCAC clash with the Panthers. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m. EST
