South Bend, IN – The Titans lost a hard fought game to the seventh ranked Saint Xavier University Cougars on Saturday afternoon at the Student Activities Center. The Titans threatened the Cougars early, but the Cougars showed their poise and veteran experience as they pulled away in the second half to pick up their 12th consecutive victory.
The Titans hung around early in the first half as Chris Beam (Borden, IN) followed a Beacher Ward (Indianapolis, IN) tip-in with two consecutive layups to bring the Titans within one point, 7-6. Almost halfway through the first half, the Cougars took their first double-digit lead of the game, but Mark White (Muncie, IN) came down the floor and connected on a triple to cut the deficit to seven points.
The Titans kept chipping away at the Cougars' lead and got it down to six points on a Joe Godfread (Elkhart, IN) lay-in with 7:34 to play.
IU South Bend made a run at towards the end of the half after trailing by as many as 15 with 4:15 remaining in the half. Riley Stichter (Milford, IN) knocked down a pair from the free-throw line at the end of the half to send the Titans to the locker room trailing by just six points.
SXU's Jack Krieger had the hot hand in the opening half as he scored 17 of the Cougars first 19 and finished the half with 25 points.
In the early goings of the second half of action, it looked as if the Cougars were going to run away with the game. However, the Titans always seem to have an answer to keep the game within 10 points, cutting the lead to as little as seven points when Brandon Beam (Borden, IN) knocked down a jumper with the assist coming from Chris Beam.
The Titans ran out of gas in the final ten minutes of the game as the Cougars outscored the Titans 33-19 to come away with a 106-85 victory.
Four players scored in double-figures for the Titans led by Chris Beam with 18 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists. Brandon Beam added 14 points while Jason Jordan (South Bend, IN) chipped in with 12 points and four assists. White finished the game with 10 points, two rebounds, and four assists.
SXU's Brad Karp finished the game with 28 points to become Saint Xavier's all-time leading scorer with 2,530 points.
The Titans will travel to Trinity International University on Wednesday with the tip set for 8:30 p.m. CST.
