South Bend, IN – IU South Bend Head Men's Basketball Coach Scott Cooper has announced the addition of former Mishawaka High School standout T.J. Benner to the team beginning in the spring of 2014. Benner has enrolled in classes at IU South Bend, but will redshirt this season and begin playing in the fall of 2014.
"T.J. is a great addition to our program," stated Coach Cooper. "He is a very athletic wing player with good length who shoots well from three-point range, and can score off the dribble. He has grown three inches and added thirty pounds since high school, and still may not be done. By sitting out the rest of this year he will get to know our system well this season, and get adjusted academically to college life. We expect him to be a key player for us right away next year as a redshirt freshman. More importantly, T.J. is a great kid who comes from a great family, and is very active in the community here in St. Joseph County. He has worked the last two plus years as a teacher's aide for special needs kids. He is exactly the type of player and person we want in our program here at IUSB."
Under Head Coach Ryan Watson, Benner, the 2011 MHS graduate averaged 12.1 points and 4.3 rebounds per game for the Cavemen.
