Deerfield, IL – The Titans ended their three game losing streak as they traveled to Trinity International and defeated the Trojans by a score of 81-69 on Wednesday night. A run in the middle part of the first half helped propel the Titans to their seventh win of the season.
The up-tempo first half began with each team's trading baskets all the way until it was 9-9. At that point TIU's Justin Peeples knocked down a pair from the free-throw line to give TIU a slim two point edge. The Titans had an opportunity to even the game at 11 with Joe Godfread (Elkhart, IN) at the charity stripe, but Godfread connected on just one of the shots. On the Trojans' next possession, they would knock down a jumper to take a 13-10 lead.
With 12:33 on the clock, the Titans gained momentum as Mark White (Muncie, IN) came off the bench to spark a 15-0 run in which he scored 11 of the 15 points. Beacher Ward (Indianapolis, IN) and Jordan Grant (Gary, IN) accounted for the other four points during the run.
The Trojans went on a brief 5-0 run to cut the IU South Bend deficit to 10 points, 31-21 and would later get within nine, but the Titans would answer as Riley Stichter (Milford, IN) put in a wide open layup to push the IU South Bend lead back to 11 points with 2:26 left in the half. Jason Jordan (South Bend, IN) then put the Titans up 14 when he put in a layup and knocked down a free throw after the foul.
The Titans would take a 42-28 lead into the locker room on the heels of the early 15-0 run.
White led the Titans in the first half with 11 points while Godfread chipped in with seven points. IU South Bend shot 51% from the field in the first half and forced the Trojans into eight turnovers.
As the second half opened, the Titans continued to push the pace, maintaining a double digit lead. Brandon Beam (Borden, IN) sank a pull up triple, which was followed by a layup from J. Jordan to put the Titans up 49-33.
With the Titans leading 57-41, the Trojans got right back into the thick of the game with a 12-0 run to get within four points at 57-53 with 9:21 left in the game.
Jordan gave the Titans another double digit lead 71-60 when he converted a lay in with the assist coming from B. Beam. However, TIU's Peeples knocked down a triple to cut into the Titans lead once again.
The Titans came up empty on their next possession after Stichter's layup was blocked by Seam Smith and the Trojans came down and got a basket to cut the IU South Bend lead to 73-65 with just under four minutes left in the game.
Trailing 76-67, the Trojans had to start fouling, and hoping the Titans would not convert their free throws, but the Titans had other plans as they hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
White finished with 15 points, 11 of which came in the huge first half run for the Titans. Jordan also finished with 15 points while Stichter recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds and also rejected four shots. B. Beam added 10 for the Titans.
The Titans shot 48% from the field and held the Trojans to 31% shooting from the field. The rebounding battle was won by the Titans as they grabbed 50 boards to the Trojans' 42.
