Joliet, IL – The Titans traveled to Joliet tonight to take on the Fighting Saints of the University of St. Francis. After dropping the first meeting in South Bend, the Titans take down the Saints on their home court by a score of 67-60. Maegan Callaway (Mooresville, IN) and Emily Strilich (Valparaiso, IN) shouldered the load for the Titans as they combined for 41 points in the win.
After falling behind 8-2 early in the early minutes of the opening half, the Titans would come back and take their first lead at 10-8 when Callaway. IUSB would extend their lead to 18-13 as part of a 16-5 run.
Each team would suffer a two minute scoring drought but the Titans' KiLee Knafel (Syracuse, IN) would end the skid for the Titans as she knocked down a shot from long range to put the Titans up 21-13. Ashley Carson (Winchester, TN) followed Knafel's three with one her own to give IU South Bend an 11 point advantage.
Once the Titans gained the lead at the 14:29 mark, they did not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the half. The Saints fought their way back into the game as they went into the halftime trailing by seven points, 32-25.
Callaway paced the Titans offense in the opening half with 13 points while adding four blocks. Strilich and Knafel each finished the half with six points.
IU South Bend connected on 12 of 24 attempts in the first half while shooting 40% from long distance.
Strilich added to the Titans lead as she quickly scored eight points to add to her first half total of six points and give the Titans their largest lead of the game, 43-29.
St. Francis would cut the Titans lead to single digits when Alexis Brown drained a triple at the 10:23 mark. However, IUSB would push their lead back to double digits when Knafel connected on her fourth three-point shot of the night.
Leading by just four with time winding down, Strilich scored five consecutive points including a three-point play to give the Titans a 65-58 cushion with 38 seconds left to play that would seal the victory for the Titans.
Strilich exploded in the second half, scoring 17 of her game-high 23 points in 33 minutes of action. Callaway finished with 18 points, five rebounds, and eight blocks. Knafel connected on four three-point baskets to add 12 points in the win. Nichole Sly (Niles, MI) dished out 10 assists.
The Titans shot 46.8% on the night and 40% from beyond the arc. USF won the rebounding battle grabbing 44 rebounds to the Titans' 31 boards.
IUSB will travel to Calumet College St. Joseph's on Saturday to battle the Crimson Wave. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
