After graduating from Mishawaka HIgh School in 2011, Javonte Young played two years of basketball for Iowa Central Community College of the National Junior College Athletic Association. Young will return to the South Bend area to finish his playing career for the IU South Bend men's basketball program.
South Bend, IN - IU South Bend Head Men's Basketball Coach, Scott Cooper continues to add talent to his 2014-15 recruiting class. As announced on Monday, Cooper received a commitment Javonte Young of Iowa Central Community College. Young marks the fourth student-athlete to commit to the men's basketball program for the upcoming academic year. Young was a high school teammate of fellow commit Tyler "TJ" Benner at Mishawaka High School.
Under Head Coach Dennis Pilcher, Young led the Tritons to 44 wins during his two seasons at Iowa Central C.C. while also leading his team to a 2012 Region XI championship.
In his first year with Iowa Central, Young averaged 7.1 points per game (ppg), 4.3 rebounds per game (rpg), all while shooting 50% from the field and 51% from beyond the arc. Javonte improved during his sophomore season with the Tritos as he scored just over 10 ppg, 3.9 rpg, and shot 49% from the field. Young was named NJCAA All-Region XI honorable mention during his final season in a Triton uniform.
"Javonte is a great get for our program," stated Coach Cooper. "He is a long, athletic, versatile guard who can shoot the three, score off the dribble, and defend really well on the perimeter. His skill set and ability to defend multiple positions are a great fit for our system. He has played two seasons in one of the best junior college conferences in the nation. That experience should help him be successful in our program right away. Javonte is also a good student who will earn his AA degree in May, and most importantly he is a high character kid. He will have a very good career here on the court in and in the classroom."
