SOUTH BEND, Ind. – In front of a packed house in the Student Activities Center, the Indiana University South Bend men's basketball team welcomed cross town foe, Bethel College. The No. 10 ranked Pilots proved to be too much for the Titans as they defeated IU South Bend, 92-75.
Freshman, T.J. Benner led four Titan players in double-figure scoring with 15 points to go along with three rebounds, one steal, and one block. Fellow freshman, Oosha Mitchell finished the night with 13 points, five boards, two blocks, and two steals.
The Titan bench was effective in the loss, scoring 20 points to Bethel's two. In the turnover battle, IU South Bend committed a season-low six on the night and forced the Pilots into 10 turnovers.
In the early goings, the Titans matched Bethel, point-for-point, until the Pilots turned a 12-11 deficit into a 31-12 lead via a 20-0 burst that lasted just over five minutes.
IU South Bend went down 20 points, but scored the last five points of the half to go into the break down 15 points.
The Titans struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 17% in the opening half.
After nearly coming back from a 23 point deficit on Saturday, the Titans looked for some of the same magic during the second half.
Young cut the Bethel lead to 11 points with a three point basket just two and a half minutes into the second half. However, the Titan defense could not get the stops they needed and would get no closer than 11 points for the duration of the game.
Just as they did in the first half, the Titans struggled from downtown in the second half, shooting 24%. For the game, IU South Bend shot just 9-of-44.
The Pilots' Matt Schauss led all scorers with 26 points while Clay Yeo added 21 for Bethel.
The Titans will not get any rest as they travel to NCAA Division I Valparaiso University tomorrow to battle the Crusaders. Tip-off is set for 8:05 p.m.
