SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Indiana University South Bend men's basketball team hosted Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference South Division leader, University of Saint Francis to the Student Activities Center on Saturday evening. The Titans gave the Fighting Saints all they could handle as it took five extra minutes for Saint Francis to defeat the Titans, 82-76.
On the boards is where the Fighting Saints had the edge. Saint Francis out-rebounded the Titans 52-35 including 17 offensive boards. Both teams shot 39% from the field.
The Fighting Saints controlled the first 10 minutes of the opening half, leading by as many as seven points. With IU South Bend trailing 18-15, the Titans went on a short 7-2 spurt, getting five points from Benner and two from Mitchell to take a 22-20 lead with 8:42 left in the half.
For the next six minutes, both teams matched each other point-for-point up to 30 and that was when Jeremy Jones hit back-to-back triples to send the Titans into the locker room with a 36-32 advantage.
Benner came out of the locker room and drained consecutive 3-point baskets to put the Titans up by eight points, their largest lead of the game.
With 10:57 remaining in the second half, the Titans were clinging to a 51-45 lead when the Fighting Saints used a 10-0 run to regain the lead with just over seven minutes on the clock. IU South Bend weathered the Saint Francis run and would snatch the lead back when Young converted a 3-point basket to put the Titans up 58-55.
The action continued to see-saw until Benner scored the most important two of his 18 points with nine seconds left to send the game into overtime.
In the extra period, the Fighting Saints boosted their lead to five points with a 9-2 run over the first 2:10 of the overtime period. The IU South Bend defense kept up their full court pressure, forcing Saint Francis into a turnover that turned into a Beam layup to cut the deficit to two points with 52 second left in overtime.
That was as close as the Titans would get before falling, 82-76. The loss moves the Titans to 5-7 overall and 1-2 in CCAC action.
IU South Bend will travel to Calumet College of Saint Joseph on Tuesday. Tip-off is slated for 8:00 p.m. EST.
