SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Indiana University South Bend men's basketball team closed out the 2014 portion of their schedule on a winning note as they took down Mount Vernon Nazarene University in double overtime on Wednesday afternoon. The Titans did not get a shot off in the first overtime, but junior Javonte Young (JR/Mishawaka, Ind.) drained a triple with 41 seconds to play in the second overtime period to seal an 84-82 victory for the Titans.
Young finished with a team-high 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field.
T.J. Benner (FR/Mishawaka, Ind.) netted 14 points in the win, eight of which came from the free throw line. The Titans shot it well from the "charity stripe" going 25-of-32 on the evening.
Taylor Brooks (FR/Granger, Ind.) gave the Titans an early lead, scoring the first five points of the game but the Cougars tied the game for the first time at 12 at the 15:53 mark.
Both teams would trade the lead, but IU South Bend boosted their lead back to five points on a layup from Jacob Foster (FR/Muncie, Ind.) with 6:46 left to play in the first half.
The Titans would maintain the lead until Mount Vernon Nazarene scored a bucket with 24 seconds left to take a 33-32 advantage into the break.
Oosha Mitchell (FR/Fort Wayne, Ind.) put the Titans back in front, knocking down a trey on the first possession of the second half.
IU South Bend showed some toughness as they trailed by five with less than four minutes to play in regulation. Jacob Foster converted a pair of free throws, followed by four straight points from junior point guard Mark White (JR/Muncie, Ind.) to give the Titans a slim one-point edge with 1:57 to play.
Foster put the Titans ahead by a basket with 17 seconds left and the Cougars' Bryan Redic nailed a jump shot to send the game into overtime.
The first overtime period continued to be a dogfight with both teams trading baskets and the period ending in a 70-70 tie.
The second and final overtime period turned into a shootout. IU South Bend trailed for the majority of the period until Young and Foster netted back-to-back 3-pointers to put the Titans up 81-80 with 1:28 on the clock.
After a quick bucket by the Cougars, Benner penetrated and kicked to Young in the corner for his 20th point of the game and secured the Titans' eighth win of the season.
Foster finished the game with 17 points, while Taylor Brooks added nine points and nine rebounds.
Up next for the Titans is Wilberforce University on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
