SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Mark White (JR/Muncie, Ind.) drained the biggest triple of the night for the Indiana University South Bend men's team, putting them in front, 75-74 with 36 second to play in the game, but on the next possession, Calumet College of St. Joseph's Franqlin Gatson hit a jumper that would be the difference in a 76-75 loss for the Titans on Monday night.
Freshman Taylor Brooks (FR/Granger, Ind.) had a career-night scoring 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting while grabbing 10 rebounds for his first career double-double.
Brooks gave the Titans a 7-2 lead which quickly evaporated as the Crimson Wave went on a 20-5 run to take the first double digit lead of the contest, 22-12.
Three consecutive 3-pointers from IU South Bend closed the gap quickly and Brooks later evened the game with another triple with 7:39 to go in the half.
Jacob Foster (FR/Muncie, Ind.) connected on his first three of the game to put the Titans in front, 32-31. The rest of the half would go back-and-forth and end with CCSJ going on a short 6-1 spurt to close out the first 20 minutes and take a 45-40 lead into the locker room.
In the second frame, both teams continued to trade buckets. Gatson put the Crimson Wave up by six with two straight 3-pointers with 5:39 to play in the game. However, IU South Bend responded with two straight 3's from Javonte Young (JR/Mishawaka, Ind.) and T.J. Benner (FR/Mishawaka, Ind.) to even the game for the ninth time.
Trailing by four with just over two minutes to play, Benner cashed in a pair of free throws to cut the CCSJ lead to two points with less than one minute to go.
White dribbled the length of the court with five seconds to play and got a clean look at a layup but could not convert at the Titans fell to the Crimson Wave.
Young finished with 16 points, four assists, and three steals while Jeremy Jones (FR/Fort Wayne, Ind.) added 11 points including three 3-pointers. White finished with 10 points.
The Titans shot 45 percent from the field and nearly 42 percent from long range.
IU South Bend will travel to LaPorte on Wednesday to take on Purdue University North Central. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
