SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Indiana University South Bend men's basketball team has added Joe Bannister to its roster for the 2015-16 season as announced by head coach Scott Cooper on Monday afternoon.
"We were excited to get Joe's commitment last week," said Cooper. "Joe is versatile point guard from a good high school program. He is a physical, skilled player who can score and create shots for others off the dribble, shoot the three, defend 94 feet, and is a pretty good rebounder despite only being 5'10"."
Bannister comes to IU South Bend from Lake Central High School in St. John, Indiana. Joe finished up his prep career under the direction of Dave Milausnic. While at LCHS, Bannister helped guide the Indians to a conference, sectional, regional title, along with a runner-up finish at the Indiana High School Athletic Association 4A state finals.
"Joe has a good feel for the game, plays with a ton of energy, and has been well coached in high school," continued Cooper. "He should be able to help us right away, and give us that depth at the point that we were really missing this past season. More importantly, Joe is a great kid who is a very good student in the classroom. He is exactly the type of player and person we want in our program, and I expect him to have a very good career here on and off the court."
In his final season at Lake Central, Joe put up impressive numbers, averaging nearly 16 points per game, grabbing five rebounds, and dishing out just over four assists while shooting 47 percent from the floor and 38 percent from long distance.
Those numbers earned Bannister a spot on the first team All-Duneland Athletic Conference team along with an All-State honorable mention selection.
