SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Indiana University South Bend men's golf team and head coach Justin Akers have announced the addition Austin Howell and Zachary Johnston to its roster for the 2015-16 season. This fall will mark the inaugural season for men's golf at IU South Bend.
Howell comes to South Bend from LaPorte, Indiana and South Central High School. Austin lettered four years in golf, two years in cross country, and one year in track. As a sophomore at SCHS, Howell earned the golf mental attitude award. As a junior and senior, he was named the most valuable player on the golf team as well as the cross country most valuable player as a senior.
IU South Bend offers my major and I really like the atmosphere and campus," said Howell. "It is away from home but close enough to occasionally have my mom's cooking. I am thrilled to be part of the first golf team at IU South Bend and Coach Akers seemed like the perfect fit for me."
Howell graduated from SCHS with academic honors and plans to study radiology while at IU South Bend.
Johnston is finishing up his prep career at Oregon-Davis Junior-Senior High School where he earned four letters in basketball, three in golf, and one in soccer for the Bobcats.
Zachary also took part in the National Honor Society and Spanish Club while at Oregon-Davis. He also was named to the honor roll each semester and ranked 7th in his class.
Johnston plans to study nursing while at IU South Bend.
