SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Beacher Ward (SR/Indianapolis, Ind. ) scored just three points on Wednesday night, but it turned out to be the biggest three points of the game as the Indiana University South Bend men's basketball team took down Holy Cross College 62-59 in front of a great crowd at the Student Activities Center.
T.J. Benner (SO/Mishawaka, Ind.) drove the lane and kicked it to the top of the key where Ward banked home a triple to seal the victory for IU South Bend who is now off to a 5-1 start, the best start in school history.
A slow start nearly doomed the Titans as they fell behind 13-0 before Jeremy Jones (SO/Fort Wayne, Ind.) put IU South Bend on the board with his first three of the night.
Holy Cross continued to control the first half, taking a 36-24 lead into the break.
IU South Bend's offense found its rhythm about five minutes into the second half. Halfway through the second frame, Riley Stichter (SR/Milford, Ind.) gathered in an offensive rebound and got the put-back to fall to give the Titans their first lead of the game with about 10 minutes to go.
Trailing by one with just under six minutes to play, Jeremy Jones scored seven consecutive points to put the Titans in front by six points. Holy Cross answered back scoring six unanswered points of their own to even the game at 59, but the dagger from Ward put the Titans ahead for good.
IU South Bend out-rebounded the Saints 40-30 in the win.
The Titans will host St. Xavier University on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
