FLORENCE, Ky. – It was a day of firsts for the Indiana University South Bend baseball team kicking off its inaugural season in Florence, Kentucky in frigid temperatures. First game, first home run, and most importantly its first win as they took the series opener against Ohio Christian University by a score of 5-2.
Junior Trey Bickel got the win on the hill for the Titans and hurled a gem allowing no earned runs over six innings pitched while striking out six Trailblazers.
Freshman Drew McDonald starting the scoring for IU South Bend driving in Mason Love with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the second. Jalon Linville added another run in the bottom of the third frame with a solo blast over the left field fence. Later in the frame Love grounded out to second base scoring Magus to put the Titans ahead 3-0 after three.
McDonald led off the top of the seventh with his second single of the game. Spencer McCool dropped a sacrifice bunt to move McDonald into scoring position. Linville roped a double scoring McDonald to add to the IU South Bend lead. The next batter, Brian Reits picked up his first hit of the game a double that scored Linville.
Austin Pickett came on in relief for Bickel and picked up his first save of the season. OCU was able to scrape two runs across in the top of the eighth but the Titans held on for the victory.
The series will continue tomorrow in Florence with a double-header starting at 12:00 p.m.
