WHITING, Ind. – Freshman pitcher Tyler Reece capped off a series sweep for the Indiana University South Bend baseball team with a no-hitter as the Titans took down Calumet College of St. Joseph 1-0 in game one and 11-1 in the nightcap.
Coming off a no-hitter of his own, IU South Bend starting pitcher Trey Bickel tossed another gem as he threw a complete game allowing six hits and fanning eight CCSJ batters.
CCSJ starter Enrique Zamora matched Bickel inning after inning until the top of the final frame. Vinny Essig led off the inning with a single to left field. After Essig swiped second base he advanced to third on after a dropped third strike from the Crimson Wave. IU South Bend's leading RBI man, Chris Mangus doubled home Essig for the eventual game-winning run.
The leadoff man for CCSJ was aboard in the bottom half of the ninth inning but was later eliminated via a pickoff. Bickel retired the next two Crimson Wave hitters to secure a 1-0 victory for the Titans.
Reece answered the call in his first start on the mound as he tossed the second no-hitter of the season for the Titans.
The offense gave Reece some run support early as they scored three runs in the first three innings.
After keeping CCSJ off the board for through five innings, the Crimson Wave finally got to Reece in the sixth. The leadoff man reached on an error and later came around to score the lone run for CCSJ.
IU South Bend plated four in the top of the fifth and four in the top of the seventh to put the Crimson Wave away and secure the series sweep for the Titans.
The Titans move to 13-10 overall on the year and 6-2 in CCAC action.
IU South Bend will return to the diamond on Monday as they travel crosstown to Bethel College.
