MISHAWAKA, Ind. – The Indiana University South Bend baseball team split a doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Bethel College. The Titans fell 12-3 before taking game two 9-1 to move to 14-11 overall on the year. Chris Mangus collected five hits while Kevin Phelps drove in four runs.
Another long ball in the bottom half of the second put the Pilots ahead 4-1 after two complete. Two errors by the Titan defense resulted in five runs for BC over the next two frames.
Bethel added three insurance runs in their half of the fifth to put the game out of reach for the Titans.
McCool and Chris Mangus each recorded two hits in the loss.
Nick Defreese took the loss in his first start on the mound as he went just two inning and gave up six runs on five hits.
Eric Calip got the start for the Titans on the mound and pitched six inning of one-run baseball. Calip scattered seven hits. Josh Fry came on in the seventh frame and fanned two hitters while stranding a Bethel runner.
The Titans half of the fourth sealed the win as they scored four runs on six hits. Brian Reits got the rally going with a single to right field. With two outs, McCool singled to put two runners aboard for Kevin Phelps. Phelps sprayed a single to right field scoring both Reits and McCool. Back-to-back doubles from Mangus and Fry plated two more runs for the Titans to give them a 6-0 advantage.
In the fifth and sixth IU South Bend added three more runs to secure a 9-1 victory and earn a split on the day.
The Titans will return to the diamond tomorrow as they host Saint Xavier University in conference action. The doubleheader is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. at School Field.
