SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Brian Reits (JR/Kalamazoo, Michigan) was the hero on Tuesday night as the Indiana University South Bend baseball team earned a split with Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Saint Xavier University. The Cougars earned a 5-1 win in game one before the Titans took the nightcap 6-5 in 10 innings.
It appeared as if the Titans were going to get swept as the trailed 5-4 entering the eighth inning of game two. With one out and nobody on, Reits took the first pitch from Dryier and sent it over the right centerfield wall to tie the game at five.
Both teams hung a zero in the ninth frame to send the game to extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th Kevin Phelps (JR/Portage, Michigan) drew a leadoff walk followed by a Chris Mangus (JR/Niles, Michigan) hit by pitch. Mason Love (FR/Monmouth, Illinois) laid down a bunt and beat it out for an infield single to load the bases. Reits came to the plate and was hit by a pitch to bring home Phelps for the game-winning run.
Reits finished the game going 1-for-3 with three RBI. Austin Weaver (FR/Kokomo, Indiana) picked up the win going two innings allowing no hits and striking out four Cougar batters.
In game one there wasn't a lot of offense for the Titans as they recorded five hits and just one run in the contest.
After allowing two runs in the top of the first inning, IU South Bend starter Kevin Phelps settled in and held SXU scoreless through the next four frames.
Reits drove in Mangus in the bottom of the fourth after Mangus ripped a double to left center with one out.
The Cougars added three runs in their final two at-bats to seal a 5-1 victory over the Titans.
IU South Bend moves to 15-12 overall and 7-3 in CCAC action with the split. The Titans will welcome St. Francis to School Field on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m. EDT.
