►General Information

All patrons of the Student Activities Center must have a valid IU South Bend ID to gain access to the Recreation Area. A patron is allowed access to facility without an ID only once per semester.

All patrons must have an up-to-date waiver of liability on file to gain access to the recreation area.

The recreation area of the Student Activities Center is a controlled access facility. Only authorized members with proper identification are allowed access. One must enter and exit through the front desk.

Any individual and/or organization not fully complying with the Student Activities Center policies and procedures or cooperating with SAC staff or instructors may be asked to vacate the premises and may have their privileges revoked. Members' privileges may not be reinstated until the individual/organization meets with the Executive Director of Athletics and Activities.

Alcohol, Tobacco, and banned substances are not permitted in any area of the Student Activities Center.

Pets are prohibited in the Student Activities Center. Guide and service dogs are permitted.

Bicycles, rollerskates, rollerblades, and skateboards are not allowed in the Student Activities Center.

No food is allowed in restricted areas, including any area not carpeted. Water in closable, non-spill containers is permitted in the facility. Beverages other than water are permitted only on carpeted areas and only in closable containers.

All patrons must wear proper attire in recreation areas.
-
The track, game room, recreation courts, and racquetball courts will be closed for all varsity athletic competitions.

Abusive, vulgar, or disruptive language will not be tolerated.
-
Fighting is grounds for immediate removal from the facility.
-
Picture-taking and/or videotaping is only permissible with consent from the professional staff from the office of Athletics and Activities.

In order to distribute flyers on campus, you need to visit the gateway in the Administration building to get them stamped for posting. Flyers may only be posted on general bulletin boards. No taping is allowed on walls or windows.

Patrons are not allowed in employee work areas.
-
The office of Athletics and Activities is not responsible for lost or stolen items. If you believe a theft has occurred, contact the SAC staff.
-
Injuries, accidents, or equipment failures must be reported to SAC staff immediately.
►Photographs and Video Protocol
Prior approval from a professional staff member of the Student Activities Center will need to be given for any photos or videotaping of the facility or any members. The professional staff will try to accommodate the requests to the best of their ability.
►Memberships
The following types of memberships are allowed to access the Student Activities Center Recreation Areas:

Currently enrolled students

Faculty/Staff members

Alumni members
-
Retired faculty members
-
Student, Faculty/Staff household members
►Guest Policy
Student Activities Center Members may bring one guest per day into the Recreation Areas for a fee of $5.00. The member is responsible for their guest and must be in the same vicinity of their guest at all times. Guests must meet the following requirements:

Must be at least 18 years old.

Must present a valid government issued identification with birth date and photo.
-
Must sign guest registration and waiver of liability form.
►Family Hour Policy
-
Family hours are Saturdays from 9:00AM to noon and Sunday's from 1:00PM to 5:00PM.
-
Family hours are for parents/guardians members and their children only.
-
Only three children per parent/guardian.
-
Children must stay with their parent/guardian at all times
-
Children are not permitted in the fitness center or on the track
-
Parents/Guardian must sign family hours registration and waiver of liability form
►Reservation of Facility Space
-
All groups or organizations that wish to reserve a recreation space in the Student Activities Center must submit a facility reservation form to the Assistant Director at least 14 days prior to the event.
-
All events that are outside normal SAC hours must be submitted at least 1 month before event date and group/organization will be charged for cost of staff.
-
Facility is reserved on a first come, first serve basis.
-
The Assistant Director may ask for a formal meeting to discuss the event before approval.
-
Groups should have one contact person for facility reservation arrangements.
-
Groups that are not IU South Bend organizations will be turned over to the Special Events Coordinator and will be charged fees for use of the facility.
►Locker Use
-
Semester Locker Rentals:
-
Members have the opportunity to rent a full locker for $20.00 or half locker for $10.00 per semester based on availability. On the last day of each semester, a clean-out will be scheduled. Every locker must be cleaned out in the interest of cleanliness, sanitizing, and locker management. Lockers will be cleaned out the week of finals and will be ready for use the week after finals. Any contents remaining in a locker after the last day of classes will be retained for one week and then donated to charity. Members purchasing the rental agreement for the semester have the right to renew for the next semester when they clean out their locker.

Even patrons renewing their lockers for another semester are required to clean out their lockers for cleaning.

Day Use Lockers:
-
Members or guests not renting lockers may use day-use lockers in the locker room or along the walls near the recreational courts. Patrons must use their own lock on these day use lockers. Any locks remaining on day-use lockers after closing with be cut off and the contents will be retained for one week, after which the contents will be donated to charity.
►Fitness Center
-
Workout attire must be worn to use the exercise machines and weight room (no blue jeans, khakis, or street shoes). The torso must be covered, which means no sports bras and/or altered shirts.

Gym shoes must be worn at all times when in the weight room. Open toed shoes/sandals are NOT allowed. Five finger shoes are not allowed in the weight room but can be worn on the cardio deck and track.

Lifters may use weight gloves only, no chalk.
-
Users not familiar with the operations of the exercise machines should ask the student staff on duty in the weight room for help.
-
Be courteous to other users by limiting workout time to one machine.
-
Please do not rest on machines
-
If you are using a machine for a long period of time, let others work inbetween sets.
-
Limit workout time on cardio machines to 30 minutes during peak times or if someone is waiting for the machine.
-
Only use the machine pin designed for the machine you plan to use. The use of an incorrect pin or improper insertion of the pin may cause injury or damage to the equipment.
-
Do not slam free weights down on the ground and do not let strength equipment slam against each other. If you cannot control the weight, do not lift it!
-
Abuse of equipment will not be tolerated. Loss of privileges will occur if it becomes a problem.
-
Be aware of your surroundings! To reduce chance of injury, keep head and limbs clear of weights and moving parts.
-
Free weight users are recommended to always use a spotter.
-
Please re-rack all free weights when finished with a workout.
-
Please wipe down all machines when you are done using them.
►Indoor Track
-
The distance for one time around the track is 1/8 of a mile.
-
The direction of traffic on the track is determined by the calendar day.
-
On odd calendar days, traffic will flow clockwise.
-
On even calendar days, traffic will flow counterclockwise.
-
Walkers and slower runners should use inside lanes. Faster runners should use outside lanes.
-
People moving in groups should never occupy more than two lanes in order to facilitate easy passage by faster runners.
-
Gym shoes must be worn at all times on the track. Five finger shoes are allowed on the track.
►Group Fitness Room
-
Proper workout attire must be worn at all times. No blue jeans are allowed in the group fitness room.
-
Gym shoes should be worn at all times, unless you are doing an activity that requires you to be barefoot. Shoes worn outside and/or shoes with heals are not allowed in group fitness room.
-
Five finger shoes are allowed in the entire facility.
-
The usage priority of the group fitness room is as follows:

Registered clubs and organizations

Members and Guest use
-
Only registered clubs and organizations are allowed to reserve times in the group fitness room. Outside groups or individuals (not associated with the University) can contact the Assistant Director to rent the group fitness room at a daily or hourly rate.

When there are open slots, the general population may use the group fitness room to practice dance routines, or to do personal workouts. They must check in a the front desk with the student shift manger to sign-in. The closet with group fitness equipment must stay locked. Students can get bands and balls from the weight room but must return these items when they are done.
►Group Fitness Room Equipment Use
-
Indoor Cycling Bikes - Use is only for group fitness classes unless approved by the Director.
-
Equipment in closets - Use is only for group fitness classes unless approved by the Director.
-
T.V. - Use for group fitness classes and workout/instructional videos.
-
Stereo - Used for group fitness classes and individuals or groups practicing dance routines or doing workouts. Volume must be kept at a moderate level. If it is too loud you will be asked to turn it down. If you or your group does not comply, you will be asked to leave the room and privileges will be revoked.
-
Mats - must be sanitized with provided disinfectant and put away properly before leaving the room.
►Game Room

All billiards, ping pong, and foosball equipment can be checked out and returned at the front desk with a valid IU South Bend ID.
-
No sitting on pool tables, ping pong tables, or foosball table.
-
Please do not use pool tables, ping pong tables, or foosball table to store personal belongings.
-
Please use cubbies in game room area or a locker to hold items.
-
All equipment must be used appropriately (no slamming pool sticks, paddles). You break it you pay for it!
-
Food and drinks with closable tops can be consumed in game area.
-
Shoes and shirt must be worn at all times in the game room area.
-
Please pick up after yourself; all trash should be placed in appropriate wastebaskets.
►Recreation and Varsity Courts
-
Proper workout attire must be worn at all times on the court. Shirts must be worn at all times (torso must be covered). No blue jeans or khakis can be worn while playing basketball or other games on the courts.
-
Exception: when just shooting around, blue jeans are permitted.
-
Only non-marking rubber-soled shoes are allowed. Hard-soled shoes and high heels will damage the floor and are not permitted. Athletic shoes must be worn when playing on courts.
-
No dunking or hanging on rims is permitted.
-
Dunking will result in immediate removal from the facility; no warnings are given,
-
No food or drink is allowed on courts or over the wood surface. Water is allowed.
-
No spitting on courts is allowed.
-
During open recreation hours, courts are used on a first come, first use basis. If you want the volleyball or soccer nets set up by the SAC staff, you must have at least six people that want to play.
-
During open recreation everyone has the right to participate. If there are participants waiting to get on the court, it should be winners on and losers off.
-
Students participating in open recreation should use recreation courts first. If both of these courts are being used for programs and the varsity court isn't being used for practices or programs, then shooting can take place on the varsity court's side baskets.
►The courts are used on a priority usage system. The following is the priority for each court:

Only indoor soccer balls or futsol balls can be used when playing soccer (correct balls can be checked out at front desk with your proper ID). No kicking the ball against the red dividers or against the walls.

No throwing of footballs, Frisbees, baseballs or softballs is permitted.

Equipment may be checked out at the front desk with your proper ID

Racquetball Courts
-
Available on a first come, first served basis.
-
If people are waiting for courts, please limit court time to one hour.
-
Only non-marking rubber soled shoes are allowed. Hard-soled shoes and high heels will damage the floor and are not permitted. Athletic shoes must be worn when playing on courts.

Volleyball players may pepper in racquetball rooms, if a room is available.

►Equipment Check-Out

Equipment (towels, basketballs, volleyballs, etc.) may be checked out at the front desk.

When checking out equipment, a patron must leave their ID with the student workers at the front desk.
-
When equipment is returned, the patron will receive their ID back.
-
Patrons are responsible for the equipment. If equipment is lost or misused and damaged, the patron will be charged.
►Lost and Found

The Office of Athletics and Activities is not responsible for lost or stolen articles.
-
Patrons are encouraged to store all items in provided lockers.
-
Staff members are not permitted to hold any items for patrons. Clothing and bags must be stored in lockers or cubbies.
-
Found items will be sent to the front desk daily. Items will be held for one week and then given to a local charity.
-
Patrons are highly encouraged to leave all valuables at home or locked in a locker.
►Patrons Responsibilities

As a member of the Student Activities Center, patrons have the responsibility to follow all rules and regulations set forth by the staff.
-
Patrons should not: misuse safety equipment, prop open doors, allow individuals without valid passes into the SAC
-
Patrons should: recognize that recreation facilities and furnishings are used by everyone, and that abuse of those areas violates the rights of others.
